Matching Edmonton's $7M+ per year offer for Vanek? Or should they
have given him up and taken Edmonton's next 4 1st round draft picks?

Depends. If they wanted to exist ten years from now, then they did the
right thing. If they aren't too concerned with staying in Buffalo, and
were interested in completely scrapping the team, then they should have
let Vanek go and take the picks.

The more interesting question is if Edmonton did the right thing.

I don't think either of them did the right thing. Vanek is certainly
a very good looking young scorer. But, to make him the 3rd highest
paid forward in the NHL after one good season? As of the end of this
week, neither team is going to content with what they've got, plus
Vanek. He's simply not worth the money, IMO. This isn't Ovechkin
we're talking about.

Buffalo still has a few decent young forwards on their team, and if
they picked up a couple of UFAs after losing Drury and Briere, they
could have still been decent, even after losing Vanek. It would have
been tough, yes. But, they could have gone into next season, bought
a few UFAs after the season, and had Edmonton's next 4 1st round
picks, next year's of which is almost certain to be a top 10 pick. I
don't think they're going to content either way.

Edmonton is simply lost. They let Smyth go after last season because
they didn't want to spend $5.5M, so they instead offered $7M+ and 4
1st round picks 2 months later. I also don't think they got the
better end of that Lupul trade last week. That is looking like a
lottery team.

IMO, neither team should have done what they did.

Hopefully, Svatos scores 30something goals again this year and Lowe
signs him to a $4M+ offer sheet and gives us 3 high draft picks.

If he continues to improve the way he has, he's worth the money. He,
along with Miller, is now the face of the franchise.

The difference was $100k. They let him walk over $100k. The face of
their franchise, the fan favorite, the one guy on Edmonton that even
Calgary and Vancouver fans liked. He was their Steve Yzerman, their Joe
Sakic (albeit a different type of player).

Stupid, stupid move. Hindsight is 20/20 though, and at least they got
something for him from the Isles, something the Isles can't say.

Well, if Vanek continues improving and ends up as a 60g player, that
offer looks quite good.

Enh, I really like Lupul's potential, but he hasn't put it together yet.
I really like Pitkanen's potential, but he hasn't put it together yet,
either. Sanderson is useful but old. Smith is useful but old.

Seems like a wash to me.

Sure is. Good. We need a couple cupcakes in our division.

Well, I was referring to whether or not they should have made an offer
to Vanek in the first place. People are throwing a hissy fit that the
Oilers did that in the first place, so I thought it might be nice to
read what a couple intelligent fans would have to say about it, as
opposed to the idiots who post on messageboards I frequent.
