Yeah, but $7 million+ every year until he turns 38?

The $7MM isn't so fabulous in the whole scheme of things. Salaries
and caps will be inflated every year, and if current trends in
inflation are any indication, by Year #8 $7MM will buy him a nice car
and a few dinners. In any case, $7MM won't look like $7MM 2008
dollars.

Given what other guys are getting, the price looks within bounds and
locks up a top talent for years for Chicago. Doesn't look like a
stupid move at all, to me.

It's a disaster for the Sharks, in fact, only partially mitigated if
DW signs somebody else worthy. Otherwise, we have nothing, and no
Bernier or #1 pick, to boot.

Adding another point:

I see Chicago has signed Huet, too. Washington's added Theodore.
Etc.

Stuff happening out there, but this feels remarkably similar to last
years where each hour, each day, we heard of another signing, but no
mention o the Sharks in the process. If DW/ownership have their
checkbook stuffed up their a** again this FA season and expect to
"fix" everything next spring, if there is a next spring, then this is
more stupidity.

If you want to make something happen, you have to break eggs, period.
there's no glory in standing pat, especially with this team, as
constructed.

Disappointing. And even more so if DW can't sign a replacement. He's
not having a good summer so far... That said, 8 years is a long time.
I'll be curious what the Sharks offered, or have to say on the matter.

It's very clear which teams are interesting in winning (Tampa anyone,
the potential clownish coach notwithstanding, among other teams.). The
Sharks clearly are not one of them, not yet at least. With the cap
ballooning the Sharks will decide right now if they are content to
return to their role as the Oakland A's of hockey, or try to play with
big boys.

I have mixed feelings about today. I am obviously disappointed that
the Sharks did nothing but lose two players, including their #1
defenseman. DW had to feel he had a chance to sign him, or he
shouldn't do that deal at the trade deadline. We all said as much
back then. How much of a chance did he really have? 8 years at more
than Joe's salary? No way.

The mixed part is Chicago has gone insane. They are $2m over the cap,
and have $19m tied up with three players, and two of those are
goalies! How are they ever going to re-sign Kane, Toews, etc.? Its
one thing to have so much money tied up with Lacavalier, Richards and
St. Louis, and quite another to have more money tied up with Campbell,
Khabi, and Huet.

I also saw a bunch of other teams do some very stupid signings, and
you watch, many of these will come with no-movement clauses. NHL GMs
drink their own Kool Aid for sure. But should I applaud DW for not
entering the fray, and getting someone who doesn't cost another piece?
I think not. He knows the need, and he didn't deliver, and Bernier
and the 1st are now officially squandered. Shame on him.
