They loved Downie when he played for Team Canada,
He was our national hero,
Now that he plays for the orange and black,
He's an international zero.

You keep saying it was a fair suspension. That's fine, your opinion.
I present you with this question: Would you still think it was a fair
suspension half way through the season when there are at least six
similar infractions with little or no suspensions involved? I just
don't see the league following through. Crosby would be lucky to get
a game for such a hit. When Downie played for Team Canada and dished
out similar hits, there wasn't one Canadian calling for his head and
the media loved him. I used to think Flyers' fans who said the NHL
had it out for the orange and black were paranoid, but I am beginning
to wonder.

He's also what - 20 years old? I hated the hit as much as anyone but give
the kid a break and see how he reacts from this experience. The penalty was
fair, serve the time, pay the fine and adjust your game to playing more
under control. Some of the comments I've read about banning him for life are
unreal. He's not the first player to take a run at someone and he won't be
the last either. Anyone remember Jordan TooToo's round house swing at a
player coming toward him at full speed in the first round of last season's
playoffs? That was just as bad - he could have broken the guys neck but no
one screamed to ban him for life.

Yes, but do you really think they will continue this path?

I agree with you that the suspension isn't fair in reference to past League
history in dealing with similar infractions. I think it is a fair start to
what is probably a new attitude from the League in dealing with illegal hits
to the head. According to League rules, hits to the head aren't illegal as
long as the hit is delivered with a shoulder or just a plain body check
without an elbow extended. In my opinion, that rule needs to be changed to
any hit to the head should be illegal. Twenty games automatic suspension
for the first occurance and double that for the second and a year-long ban
for a third.

Yah, the media did love him..it seemed like Peter McGuire wanted to perform
felatio on Downie...I heard that McGuire bought Downie's jockstrap from
Hockey Canada for $500....I guess there was a whole lot of sniffing going
on...
